There are a few things that we do in an effort to introduce or in some cases reintroduce the Turtle to family and friends that are thousands of miles away. I made a mobile with pictures of all of our immediate family; grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles and cousins. We're yet to hang it, but during our play time, I dangle it over his head and we talk about everyone and some of the things that make them unique.
We also play a little game on his changing table or during play time, where I bicycle his legs and ask him, "Where do you want to go today?" We then take a "bike ride" to North Carolina, Utah, Colorado or California (depending on who we're visiting). Sometimes we even head East to see our friends and daddy's writing partner in France. Or maybe we stay closer to home, and take a short ride to Manhattan or Brooklyn to visit friends.
And then of course we Skype. The Turtle isn't really comfortable with Skyping yet. It's a little too much stimulus and it doesn't take long before he starts to fuss. But for a few minutes he's fascinated by the talking heads on the computer screen, and will even, sometimes, laugh or smile at his grandmas' and grandpas' funny voices.
It's not perfect. Of course, I would rather everyone get a chance to hug and kiss my little guy; hear him laugh and watch him grow. But it's something.
